Innovative Solutions: Digital Storytelling
In April 2007, seven young cancer survivors from across the U.S. participated in a three-day video production workshop held in San Francisco. The workshop was sponsored by HopeLab, as part of our ongoing work to understand the needs and interests of young people with cancer, and led by the Center for Digital Storytelling, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to the art of personal storytelling.
The Digital Storytelling process allowed the young survivors to craft, record, and share their personal stories using multimedia tools. Participants combined audiovisual materials from their personal archives (photographs, video footage, music and sound) to produce 3-4 minute videos narrated in their own voices. The results are powerful and illuminating documents of the cancer experience and its impact on the lives of young people.
