Original publication date: October 23, 2006
Author: Nick Wingfield
This article looks at how video games are reaching out to young audiences with messages about health. Re-Mission and the study behind it were featured, alongside Dance Dance Revolution by Konami Corp. and Brain Age by Nintendo.
Pat Christen, HopeLab president and CEO, commented on HopeLab’s deep belief that the game needed to truly engage patients to be effective in supporting their health, saying, “[Re-Mission] needed to be fun for its players.”
Taylor Carol, an 11-year-old leukemia patient, was also interviewed. He began playing Re-Mission shortly before he underwent a bone marrow transplant. Taylor said, “I thought it was a really cool game that gives you a little bit of hope and makes you feel like you can beat cancer. It just makes you feel like you’ve got to do your part and take your medication.”
